During the war he served with Landw.Inf.Reg.74, 11.Kompanie, where he was promoted three times between 1917 and 1918, eventually becoming a sergeant.

Also decorated on 28-2-1918 with the Iron Cross 2nd class and on 26-9-1918 with the Braunschweig Militär Verdienst Kreuz 2nd class.
